What is BPI in basketball? ›

What is BPI? ESPN invented the College Basketball Power Index or BPI. It is a stat that measures how far above or below average every team in the nation is and it projects how well the team will do.

Ken Pomeroy is the creator of the college basketball website and statistical archive KenPom.

KenPom measures teams based on efficiency to not only paint a picture of how a basketball team compares to the rest of the nation, but also a fairly predictive formula that can chart where a team might be heading, as well.

Luck rating (Luck): KenPom defines this as a measure of the deviation between a team's actual winning percentage and what one would expect from its game-by-game efficiencies. Essentially, a team involved in a lot of close games should not win (or lose) all of them. Those that do will be viewed as lucky (or unlucky).

In sports, strength of schedule (SOS) refers to the difficulty or ease of a team's/person's opponent as compared to other teams/persons. This is especially important if teams in a league do not play each other the same number of times.

Higher BPI Teams Are More Likely To Win

The higher the BPIS of a team, the more likely that team is to win. In fact, according to sports data provider Stats LLC., teams with a BPIS of . 500 or greater are 67% more likely to win than those with a BPIS below .

They rely on cold, hard numbers, which means they don't take into account many of the intangibles that can influence the outcome of a college basketball game. That includes injuries, which KenPom specifically does not factor in.

1) NET uses game location as a factor in the ranking system, while KenPom does not factor where the game was played in rankings. 2) Ken Pom uses adjusted efficiency based on how many possessions a team has per game while NET uses points per 100 possessions regardless of possession per game.

The NET includes more components than just winning percentage. It takes into account game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses.

What is adjusted offense? ›

AdjO - Adjusted Offense - This is the number of points (per 100 possessions) that the team in question would be expected to score against an average defense.

The rating percentage index, commonly known as the RPI, is a quantity used to rank sports teams based upon a team's wins and losses and its strength of schedule. It is one of the sports rating systems by which NCAA basketball, baseball, softball, hockey, soccer, lacrosse, and volleyball teams are ranked.

Higher-ranked teams are predicted to beat lower-ranked teams on a neutral court. But the predictive part of the site also factors in home-court advantage, so KenPom will frequently predict that a lower-ranked team will win, depending on where the game is played.

Without skilled players, managers and tactics, luck is of little value in itself. On the other hand, when the teams are equally matched, luck can be a decisive factor. The probability of luck can be estimated, but its impact cannot be quantified. When luck does not matter, it's worthless.

Small forwards are responsible for scoring points and defending, and often are secondary or tertiary rebounders behind the power forward and center. To read these Sagarin ratings, the method is quite simple: You take the ratings for both teams and compare them, adding the home advantage bonus to the home team's rating. The ranking is based off of offensive rating and defensive rating for each team. A team's offensive rating is the number of points, on average, they score per 100 possessions. For instance, last season Virginia's offensive rating was second in the country at 123.4.
